Upgraded to NIT in 2004. The Times of India (8 February 2004), quoting the director-designate, reports the conversion from Bihar College of Engineering took effect on 28 January 2004, making it the 18th NIT, with assets and personnel deemed transferred from that date.
Its NIRF Engineering rank has improved in every edition since 2019: 134, 92, 72, 63, 56, 55 and 53.

No MHRD or nitp.ac.in dated notification of the 28 January 2004 conversion was found; the date comes from contemporaneous reporting, so the conversion is established at year level and the day is attributed.
The intermediate 'Bihar College of Engineering' name and the date of that renaming.
Whether the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 is the instrument that made it an Institution of National Importance; we did not retrieve the Act or its schedule.
