IIT Patna helps set up model physics and chemistry labs in 50 government schools

Under an MoU signed in April 2022 between the Bihar Education Project Council and IIT Patna, the institute gave technical support, equipment specification and teacher training for model physics and chemistry labs in 50 government higher secondary schools: seven in Patna first, then 43 in other districts. The first seven were complete by December 2023, and the chief minister launched all 50 in August 2026.

What's confirmed

5 facts backed by sources

  • IIT Patna and BEPC signed an MoU in April 2022 for model physics and chemistry labs in 50 government higher secondary schools, seven in Patna first and 43 elsewhere.
  • IIT Patna's role was technical support, equipment availability and teacher training. Officials said in April 2022 the state would sanction about Rs 8 crore, at Rs 15 to 16 lakh per lab.
  • In December 2023 the secondary education director said Rs 1.05 crore had been spent on the first phase, out of an estimated Rs 7.96 crore.
  • In August 2026 Live Hindustan reported Rs 1,05,31,400 spent on the seven Patna labs and Rs 7,96,49,900 on the 43 second-phase labs, and listed the district spread (Patna 7, Samastipur 3, two each in Arwal, Nalanda, Sitamarhi and Supaul, one elsewhere).

6 things to watch for

  • The exact MoU date. TOI says it was signed 'on Friday'; the 101Reporters article says 28 April 2022. The timeline gives the month only.
  • The cost. In December 2023 Rs 7.96 crore was the total estimate (Rs 1.05 crore spent, Rs 6.91 crore remaining); in August 2026 Rs 7.96 crore is reported as the second-phase spend alone. Both are news reports of official statements, not an audit.
  • The exact launch date (scheduled for 9 August 2026; the report is dated 10 August).
  • Any evaluation of learning outcomes. The minister said in 2022 the model would be evaluated before extension to all 9,360 schools; no evaluation has been found.
  • The first-phase school lists differ between TOI (2022) and 101Reporters (2023).
  • In December 2023 one first-phase principal said the project had not brought much change because the school already had a lab.
